Our Museum Expert Says:

Located on Museum Row on the Upper East Side of Manhattan sits The Guggenheim Museum, an unusually shaped building (an art exhibit in its own right) designed by world-class architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Step inside this layered, spiral structure, and you'll find a world of modern avant-garde art at your fingertips (though of course, you're not actually allowed to touch the art!).

The permanent Guggenheim collection is a culmination of six different private collections: a collection of abstract, non-objective, spiritual paintings belonging to Solomon R. Guggenheim; his niece, Peggy Guggenheim's private collection consists of Surrealist and abstract paintings and sculptures; a collection of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and early Modern works, from the collection of Justin K. Thannhauser; German Expressionism masterpieces from Karl Nierendorf; Katherine S. Dreier's historic avant-garde collection; and a collection of Minimalist, Post-Minimalist, Environmental, and Conceptual art belonging to Dr. Giuseppe Panza di Piumo.

One of the special features of the Guggenheim Museum is the placement of the artworks. Whereas at more traditional museums, works are placed according to style and era, the paintings and sculptures at the Guggenheim are situated according to aesthetic design—size, color, and the overall pleasingness to the eye.

The Guggenheim Museum is open every day of the week but Thursday with an admission fee of around $18 with discounts for students and seniors. Kids enter for free. Come to the Guggenheim on Friday evenings starting at 5:45 and enjoy the museum's Pay What You Wish policy, where admission is donation only. What better way to kick off a Friday night in New York City than with some of the best art masterpieces in the world!
