Wow, this sounds like a great combination – a children's museum and a museum of native Americans. We all know kids are fascinated by American Indian culture, traditions and their daily lives. But, we are not in the canyon lands of Utah, we are not far from the canyons of Manhattan. Although featured on many website, there is no Children's Museum of the Native American. What there is is the Children's Cultural Center of Native America, which focuses on school groups in a two-hour program aimed at giving kids a view of Native American life in the past as well as today. Sit in a teepee, participate in a powwow dance with American Indians who also happen to be 100% New Yawkers. Kids will have a great time dressing up in tribal regalia and participating in art and craft workshops while parents and teaches will be impressed by the surrealism of the whole thing – an authentic Native American cultural experience two minutes from the IRT #1 train. Just another proof that there is something to be said for New Yorkers who claim that there in no reason to ever leave the city.
Don't be surprised when you show up at 550 West 155th Street in the northern reaches of Manhattan and find a church. Not sure what the connection is, but the center is located inside the Church of the Intercession. Contact the center in advance – most visits are arranged through school groups, but family groups are welcome, as well..
