Our Museum Expert Says:

Wander through a maze of artistic experimentation with diverse mediums and styles!

One of the first alternative spaces in New York, Artists Space was founded in 1972 to support contemporary artists working in the visual arts, including video, electronic media, performance, architecture and design. The mission of Artists Space is to encourage diversity and experimentation in the arts, provide an exhibition space for untried art and artists, and foster an appreciation for the role artists play in our community as reporters, provocateurs, commentators, and peers.

Artists Space, located on a small cobblestone side street of Soho on the third floor, is fairly hard to find. The gallery space, a single floor in a loft, is divided up by interior walls that create a kind of twisty, maze-like feeling, and since there are only a few freestanding pieces, the gallery seems to be fairly sparse. Nevertheless, the staff provides great explanations of the artists' motives, helping to make the artwork more understandable and accessible!

The gallery is open on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 12-6 p.m., on Wednesday from 2-8 p.m., and on Saturday from 12-5 p.m. Admission is free. To get to Artists Space, take C/E subway to Spring Street.
