God and mammon come together at Trinity Church in New York City. Located at the intersection of Broadway and Wall Street, this neo-Gothic structure sports a 281-foot spire which once dominated the New York City skyline. Trinity Church also encompasses St. Paul's Chapel, New York's only surviving pre-revolution structure, and its oldest continuously-used public building.
Consecrated on May 1, 1846, Trinity Church was finally designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976 for its architectural beauty and its place in New York City history. Designed by Richard Upjohn, the Episcopalian church is considered a prime example of Gothic Revival architecture, including its magnificent stained-glass windows, flying buttresses, and vaulted ceilings.
Brief tours of Trinity Church are given daily at 2 PM, though groups of five or more should call ahead for reservations. There is a small museum containing such items of historical interest as the 1697 church charter from King William III of England, and replicas of the pistols used in the Hamilton-Burr duel. Though both admission and tours are free, visitors are encouraged to donate $2 for noonday concerts, held regularly at Trinity Church on Mondays and Thursdays at 1 PM. If you find yourself hungry, there are literally hundreds of restaurants within easy walking distance of Trinity Church, with everything from deli to pizza readily available just a short stroll away.
To reach Trinity Church, take the 4 or 5 subway route or the M1 or M6 bus route. Visit Trinity Church, and enjoy outstanding architecture, history and spirituality.
