Visit the birthplace and boyhood home of President Teddy Roosevelt!
The Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site is actually a recreated brownstone of the original house where Roosevelt lived until he was 14 years old. The original building was demolished in 1916 but the lot was purchased and the house was rebuilt three years later by the Women's Roosevelt Memorial Association. Visitors to the birthplace can take Park Ranger guided tours which illustrate the life of the Roosevelts in the 19th century's gilded age. About half of the furnishings at the birthplace came from the original house and full rooms of the original home have been all but lifted and placed in the new construction, including the parlor, which Roosevelt once described as "a room of much splendor," and the library. The National Park Service oversees the administration of the site, and there is a 40 minute tour every hour.
The Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site is located in New York City at 28 East 20th Street, between Park Avenue South and Broadway. Via public transportation, take the 6, N and R to 23rd Street or the 4 and 5 to Union Square. Feel at home at President Teddy Roosevelt's home!
