You don't need to be Irish or Catholic to marvel at the splendor of one of the United States' best known churches, St. Patrick's Cathedral. This Neo-Gothic style Catholic cathedral, the seat of the archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, is one of the most popular architectural sites in New York.
Construction on the New Cathedral was started in 1858, just a few years after New York was designated as an Archdiocese by Pope Pius IX. During a halt in construction during the American Civil War, St. Patrick's (on Mulberry Street at the time) burnt down in an 1866 fire. The New St. Patrick's Cathedral was finally completed in 1879. The New Cathedral is open daily from 6:30 am to 8:45 pm. Interested religious visitors will be able to attend liturgical services held several times throughout the day. Confession is taken after Morning Mass and between the hours of 12:00-1:30 pm. Tours are available with the Cathedral's volunteer guides and usually take place from Monday to Friday between the hours of 9-11 am and 1:30-4:30 pm. There are religious events scheduled throughout the year which may interest you as a sightseer even if you're not participating yourself.
St. Patrick's Cathedral is located on Fifth Avenue between 50th and 51st Streets in New York City. Whether you want to step in for a prayer or just want to stare in awe and wonder at the magnificent structure, make sure to stop by St. Patrick's Cathedral for an architectural treat!
