Experience life as an immigrant at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, located in the Lower East Side neighborhood of Manhattan. The museum preserves an authentic tenement building that was in use in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum offers tours to commemorate those immigrants who lived in tenement buildings.
Visitors to the Lower East Side Tenement Museum can experience a variety of tours both in and out of the museum itself. The two primary indoor tours of the Lower East Side Tenement Museum are Piecing it Together, that focuses on a Jewish immigrant family from Poland at the turn of the 20th century; and Getting By, that focuses on a German-Jewish and Sicilian-Catholic family in 1873 and 1929, respectively. For kids, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum also offers the Confino Family Apartment tour, an interactive living history program designed for families. The museum also offers the Lower East Side Stories walking tour that takes visitors on a journey through the neighborhood. All the tours are an hour long. There are dozens of food options within easy walking distance of the museum, ranging from Mexican to deli.
To get to the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, take the B or D train to Grand Street, exit at Grand and Chrystie, and walk east for four blocks, then head north on Orchard Street until #97.
