Green-Wood Cemetery, located in Brooklyn, was founded in 1838 in the same area that Prospect Park would, a few years later, be laid out. Many famous (and over half a million not really famous) people have been buried here throughout the years, including Leonard Bernstein, Joey Gallo and Samuel Morse.
Recent efforts have been made to restore the graves of the 3000 Civil War veterans buried at Green-Wood. The restoration brings an Arlington or Gettysburg-like feel to Brooklyn. In the "melting-pot" sprit of New York - Union and Confederate soldiers are buried side by side. The cemetery is a National Historic Landmark and a naturally beautiful place to admire both the serene environment, and the artistic and respectful tombstones and mausoleums.
