Our History Buff Says:

Explore a former military post, used originally during the Revolutionary War and in virtually every other major U.S. military engagement! This unique park-like setting is minutes away from the financial capital of the world and is a National Historic Landmark District and a New York City Historic District featuring a variety of architecture and buildings sure to excite and intrigue. With 18th century fortifications, pre-Civil War arsenal buildings, Victorian and Romanesque Revival housing, and early 20th century neo-classical architecture, this 172 acre island in Upper New York Bay, takes its current name from British colonial times when the colonial assembly reserved the island for the exclusive use of New York's royal governors.

Today, Governor's Island offers a stunning panorama of the New York skyline, with particularly dramatic views the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the New York Harbor. Governors Island is only open seasonally (mostly in the summer) and services and facilities are limited, so bring your own food and water. Check the site's schedule for opening times and for fun events taking place on the island. Past Governor's Island events include Family Festivals, the Dreamland Orchestra/ Jazz Age, and Prisoners of 2nd Avenue which featured classic rock and blues in the spirit of the music heard at Bill Graham's Fillmore East.

The ferry to Governors Island departs from the Battery Maritime Building located at 10 South Street in lower Manhattan. Bring your walking shoes and a picnic blanket and prepare for a fun-filled day on Governors Island!
