Visit the birthplace of American government, where George Washington took the oath as our first President, and the site that was home to the first Congress, Supreme Court, and Executive Branch offices. Welcome to Federal Hall National Memorial.
26 Wall Street was the beginning of America's fledgling government and it was in this building, designed to be New York's City Hall in 1700, that Congress met to tally up the votes that gave George Washington the presidency. The present Federal Hall building was completed in 1842 as a federal customs house; today, the Federal Hall National Memorial serves as a museum and memorial to our first President and the beginnings of the United States. Learn about George Washington's inauguration, and see models of the original City Hall and Federal Hall as well as pieces of the original building. Visitors can also see the first inaugural Bible and enjoy ranger-led talks describing the history of the site, offered daily. Highlights include a brief video on the important events at the original Federal Hall and exhibits on the site's history. Best of all, visitors to Federal Hall can watch costumed park rangers give presentations on Revolutionary War culture.
Federal Hall National Memorial is located at the corner of Wall and Nassau streets, just off Broadway, in downtown Manhattan, NY.
