Address:Bronx, New York
Though you won't find orchards here, the mile-long Orchard Beach, also known as the "Bronx Riviera," is the borough's most popular summertime spot, and has quite an interesting history. The beach was created by filling in about one third of Pelham Bay with landfill, topped off by 1.2 million cubic yards of sand which were brought from New Jersey and Queens. Today, Orchard Beach is the only beach in the Bronx, and is filled with fun activities for visitors, such as exploring the promenade pavilion filled with food stores and shops. Kids can run wild on the two available playgrounds, and everyone can enjoy the two picnic areas and 26 basketball, volleyball, and handball courts.
Of course, no beach is complete without a boardwalk, and Orchard Beach is no exception. In addition to people-watching, there's a band shell here for weekend concerts, should you arrive then. Of course, you may simply be content with a relaxing stroll, breathing in the saltwater air of the Long Island Sound. Changing areas and showers are available as well.
