Public Recreational Parks in Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and New York City

Things to do / Travel Guide

Public Parks in Manhattan

Central Park, in the heart of Manhattan, is an ideal place for taking kids to run and play. Also an ideal spot for biking, skateboarding, rollerblading, or even just pushing your baby in a stroller, there is much to enjoy in this amazing park. There are playgrounds galore as well as a wildlife center housing monkeys, penguins, and polar bears. You can also go with the whole family on a rowboat ride. While you are busy working the oars and steering, the kids can keep their eyes peeled for turtles, frogs, ducks, and swans. Also in Central Park, kids can pilot remote-controlled sailboats at the Conservatory Water.

Riverside Park on Manhattan's Upper West Side is often overlooked and not nearly as crowded as Central Park. There are animal-themed playgrounds, like the Elephant Playground on 76th Street and the Hippo Playground on 91st Street, in the park that also happen to be some of the cleanest in the city. For “rollerbladers” there is the Riverside Skate School, containing five ramps, half pipes, quarter pipes, and rails. In the winter, bring a sled or toboggan over to 91st Street or 108th Street to sled down some great hills.

Public Parks in Queens

Forest Park, in Queens, near Kew Gardens and Woodhaven, is an urban forest with a carousel, playgrounds, and many recreational facilities. McCarren Park in the Greenpoint area of Brooklyn has facilities for many recreational activities that will appeal to kids, such as soccer, volleyball, and kickball.

In short, when your kids need to get out some energy, they'll have plenty of places to do so in New York City.
