Hotels in Manhattan and New York City

Resort and Lodging Guide

Finding the right New York City hotel to stay in can be challenging and requires some effort. If you plan to visit during Christmas/New Year's, September's convention season, or when there is some kind of a major event happening, like a UN meeting or presidential visit, try to make hotel reservations as early as possible.

In a city where the penthouse suite at the Four Seasons costs around $30,000 a night, “cheap” is a rather relative term for a hotel room. Despite this, there are accommodations in the city to fit just about every pocketbook. Keep in mind that “cheap” in Manhattan may be considered expensive in many other places, and that the less you pay for a New York hotel room, the fewer amenities you'll get. Also of note, taxes and surcharges tend to add about 15% to advertised room rates.

Be aware that if you are traveling with pet in tow, you should check if your chosen lodging venue allows pets. Some establishments may require a safety deposit for this privilege.

Hostels in New York City

The most inexpensive accommodations to be had in New York are in the several hostels that dot the city. The largest of these is the American Youth Hostel on the Upper West Side. With 624 beds, it is the largest hostel in the world. You pay for a bunk bed and linens to make your own bed in a room shared by four to six people. You do get a private locker to store your belongings, but it is a good idea to bring your own lock. There are shared bathrooms in the hallways.

A less bare-bones hostel is the Jazz on the Park Hostel near Central Park West at 36 West 106th Street. This venue offers single-sex dormitories, double rooms with a shared bath, or double rooms with a private bath. Room rates include bed linens, towels, continental breakfast, Internet access, and laundry facilities. This hostel attracts lots of young backpackers because it has no curfew, a sensible drinking policy, great BBQs, and funky parties. There are also Jazz hostels in Greenwich Village and in Harlem.

Bed and Breakfasts in New York City

Although they are not the most common accommodations in Manhattan, it is possible to find a bed and breakfast (B&B) establishment. Some B&Bs are hosted by knowledgeable people who are more than willing to provide guests with lots of pertinent information, while others are not hosted at all. Some more well-known B&Bs are the Greenwich Village Habitue, the Gracie Inn, and the Sugar Hill Harlem Inn.

Hotels in New York City

Visitors can find a New York City hotel in any of the city's five boroughs, with prices ranging from the affordable to the decadently expensive. On one end are the historic Waldorf-Astoria and the Plaza, attractions in their own right, which have been supported by rich and famous guests for over a century. All of the major national hotel chains have branches in Manhattan; there are also many fine hotels located in the other boroughs, but in some specific areas more than others. In general, the affordable, yet comfortable, hotels charge no less than $250 a night in Manhattan, and $200 in Brooklyn and Queens.

There are a number of excellent and comfortable hotels in the vicinity of the airports serving New York City. Near John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK) you'll see hotels bearing the names of many national chains, including Ramada, Best Western, Days Inn, Radisson, Hilton, and Howard Johnsons. Near LaGuardia Airport (LGA) are the Wyndham Garden Hotel, the Courtyard by Marriott LaGuardia Hotel, the La Quinta Inn Queens, and The Mark. Many of the airport hotels actually have starting prices at below $200 per night, and provide easy access to Manhattan via public transportation.
