Both freshwater and saltwater fishing are available in the waters around New York City. You cannot always keep the fish you catch, so find out beforehand wherever you plan to fish. Generally fish caught in freshwater areas must be released, while fish caught in saltwater regions may be kept. If fishing from a boat and not a pier, ascertain whether you or the captain keeps the fish.
Freshwater Fishing in New York City
The best places for freshwater fishing, where you can catch fish like largemouth bass, bluegill sunfish, catfish, carp, and others, are:
- Manhattan - Central Park's lakes
- Bronx - Van Cortland Lake and Crotona Lake
- Brooklyn - Prospect Park Lake
- Queens - Baisley Park Pond, Meadow Lake, Willow Lake, Kissena Lake, and Oakland Lake
- Staten Island - Clove Lake, Silver Lake, and Wolfe's Pond
Saltwater Fishing in New York City
New York City also offers saltwater fishing on chartered boats that venture out into the region's surrounding waters, typically to Jamaica Bay, Gerritsen, Great Kills, and Long Island Sound. There, you can fish for flukes between May and September, striped bass between March/April and November/December, porgies from June-October, and blackfish from October-May.
