Horseback Riding in New York City
Rent a horse and explore the three bridle paths of Central Park. You can also ride through the wooded trails of Bronx Pelham Bay Park, the miles of trails in the Bronx's Van Cortland Park, the equestrian trails of Forest Park in Queens, or along the bridle path in Prospect Park. Rental rates are generally between $25 and $50 an hour.
Horse and Buggy Rides in Central Park
Around the perimeter of Central Park, you'll frequently see horses and buggies lined up waiting to take you on a relaxing ride. Though costly, this New York City tradition is quite enjoyable, regardless of the season. Central Park provides a gorgeous backdrop as you get the feeling of what it was like to travel through Manhattan in the 19th century.
Bridge Walks in New York City
Walking across one of the many bridges that connect Manhattan to the other boroughs and New Jersey is a fun and healthy activity. By far the most interesting of these walks can be had across the Brooklyn Bridge. More than 120 years after its creation, the bridge is still an engineering masterpiece. Since the 1980s it has been lit up at night as a means of highlighting its fantastic Gothic architecture. You can join the thousands of New Yorkers who walk across this historic bridge every day (takes about 30 minutes each way). There is also a bike lane.
Ice Skating in New York City
There are several famous places to go ice skating in New York City in the winter. Try Central Park's Wollman Rink and enjoy the atmosphere. Alternatively, you can go to Rockefeller Center to see and be seen. Lasker Rink, around 106th Street on the East Side, offers fun skating, and is cheaper than the other two venues, entrance and skate rental coming to less than $10.
Sports at Chelsea Piers in New York City
Get out all that excess energy at Chelsea Piers on 23rd Street in Manhattan. The complex encompasses facilities for 28 different activities, such as bowling, gymnastics, wall climbing, skateboarding, soccer, indoor batting cages, and ice skating (when in season). There's also a spa and a health club for your enjoyment.
Please be aware that access to these activities will probably require staying in a hotel in Manhattan. There are some budget motels in New York, usually near the airports.
