Our Sports Superfan Says:
As the only place featuring NASCAR racing in New England, New Hampshire Motor Speedway is one of the region's largest sports venues, and has been very successful despite being built without any consulting engineers.
The track holds two Sprint Cup races annually, as well as a minor league and truck event from NASCAR. In addition, New Hampshire Motor Speedway hosts a number of smaller races for many types of different vehicles from April to October. In the mid 1990s it also used to be the home of open wheel racing in both the IndyCar and Cart Series.
Opening in 1990 as the first super speedway to be built in the United States since 1969, NHMS gradually worked itself into the major auto racing scene, getting its first major NASCAR race in 1993, and a second in 1997. The two races, each of 300 laps, are still held in July and September respectively. Fans coming to the track can see qualifying for these races, as well as the other NASCAR races, during the race weeks, making those days full of excitement.
In 2004, NHMS made history, as the first track in NASCAR to host a Chase for the Cup (NASCAR's playoffs) race. That race was won by Kurt Busch, who had also won the July race that year. That was the second, and last (as of 2007), time that someone won both races here in one year (Jimmie Johnson in 2003 was the first).
New Hampshire Motor Speedway is located in Loudon, New Hampshire, less than 10 miles from the state capital of Concord.
