Our Ski Specialist Says:

Tuckerman Ravine is for those who like to work hard -- very hard -- for their adrenaline rush. Located on the east face of Mt. Washington, the highest peak of the White Mountains of New Hampshire, the area is known for its extreme and often dangerous winter weather. An abundance of snow, the strongest winds on the planet (231 mph record) and dramatic, rapid weather changes, mean this is not an area for the faint-of-heart, and only for those truly prepared for the challenge (and the danger). The extreme weather means the season opens in March at the earliest, usually in mid-April, and lasts through as late as June. Skiiers hike up the mountain for three hours with all their equipment in order to decend the mountains 55-degree pitches, rock chutes, and cliffs. And they better come prepared! Tuckerman Ravine is strictly about skiing -- there are absolutely no facilities up on the mountain.

The summit of Mt. Washington is above treeline and completely exposed to the area's extreme weather. It is only skiable from mid-March to April. The base of Tuckerman Ravine, at 4,500 feet, has steep slopes and well-placed rocks. It is about 45 minutes from the Bowl. Routes on the middle of Tuckerman Ravine's Bowl tend to be steeper, with 40- to 50-degree pitches. Easier trails are Left and Right Gulley on the Bowl. Dodges Drop is reportedly 50 degrees. Beware of avalanches and ice falls in the Bowl. When avalanche danger is high, skiiers might opt instead to ski Hillmans Highway.
