With over six million visitors a year, White Mountain National Forest is the second most popular national forest in the U.S. and is one of the country's most visited attractions.
Located in Maine's Western Mountains Region along the New Hampshire border, White Mountain National Forest offers spectacular scenery in a northern mountain environment. The only national forest in New Hampshire or Maine, White Mountain National Forest contains over 100 miles of Appalachian Trail and most of White Mountain's major peaks are over 4,000 feet high, great for peak bagging. The forest, although close to major metropolitan areas, is filled with wildlife and provides the perfect rugged adventure.
With 1,200 miles of hiking trails, 23 campgrounds and numerous ski areas. visitors can enjoy fishing, wildlife viewing, scenic driving and cross-country skiing. A highlight of White Mountain National Forest is its cool mountain lodges that provide food, shelter and comforts for hikers. Each of the lodges are about a day's hike apart, so it's possible to travel light.

To get to the White Mountain National Forest, motorists from the south can take I-93 to Lincoln, NH, where they can pick up the Kancamangus National Scenic Byway, which runs the length of the White Mountain National Forest to Conway, New Hampshire.
