Mt. Monadnock is well known for its status as an inselberg, or an isolated mountain, which boasts incredible views of the six New England states. Its beauty has inspired writers such as Thoreau, Emerson and Mark Twain and the area has a rich cultural history. Designated a National Natural Landmark in 1987, Monadnock State Park boasts 40 miles of trails, not to mention the 3,165-foot Mt. Monadnock itself, which is composed of both schist and quartzite rocks. The trails at lower elevations are perfect for cross-country skiing in the wintertime as well as winter hiking. Campgrounds are available with bathrooms and running water, for those who want to spend the night at this classic of a New England State Park.
From Monadnock State Park - New Hampshire:
With its thousands of acres of protected highlands, 3,165-ft. Mt. Monadnock was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1987. There are 40 miles of maintained foot trails, many of which lead to the bare rock summit through unique alpine vegetation. Unsurpassed 100-mile views to points in all six New England states are the reward for a climb. A magnet for hikers, Monadnock is said to be the second most frequently climbed mountain in the world, after Japan's Mt. Fuji. Approximately 12 miles of the trail system in the lower elevations offers ski touring for the experienced cross country skier.
