From Johnson Woolen Mills, LLC:

The JOHNSON tradition reaches back more than 163 years to a time when local farmers brought their wool here to have it woven into cloth. In the late 19th century, we began making heavy woolen trousers, well suited to the climate of Vermont and the rest of New England. In the early 20th century, we added shirts, jackets and vests to our line of ready-made clothing. Today our factory is still at the same location on the banks of the Gihon River.
