New Hampshire
- New Hampshire has registered an official tartan with the proper authorities in Scotland, used to make kilts worn by the state police while they serve during the New Hampshire Highland Games each September.
- The first free public library in the United States was established at Peterborough in 1833.
Vermont
- Killington, Vermont has twice voted to secede from Vermont and join New Hampshire - a largely symbolic act, since secession would require the agreement of both states' legislatures and the U.S. Congress.
- Vermont has the most maple trees of all the New England states. More than 500,000 gallons of maple syrup are made here each year.
- The jam band Phish got their start right in the heart of Burlington, at the popular Nectar's lounge.
- The Von Trapp family, whose escape from Austria during World War II was made famous in the 1965 Disney musical “The Sound of Music,” moved to Stowe, about 40 miles west of Burlington, because the place reminded them of the Alpine setting they left behind.
- Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield founded a company in Vermont in 1978 known around the world as “Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream.” The company has since been sold to Unilever, but its worldwide headquarters and factory are still located in Waterbury. Tours of the facility are available every day and, of course, there are free samples!
