From poetry reading to dance to classical music, the arts-related events in the New Hampshire and Vermont region abound. Rest assured: wherever you'll wander throughout the region's historic cities and quaint towns, you'll uncover interesting and entertaining events. Local nightclubs and bars can be found throughout the region, with the most popular and well-known found in the places with large student populations, such as Burlington and Rutland, in Vermont, and Hanover, Manchester, Portsmouth, and Concord, in New Hampshire.

Nightlife in New Hampshire and Vermont

Dartmouth College coeds like to frequent the bars and pubs in Hanover, New Hampshire, especially those on Main Street, which feature live music and usually offer microbrews on tap. And if you find yourself in the White Mountains area, there are plenty of pubs and taverns to visit that will make your evenings enjoyable and memorable.

For year-round fun, head to Nectar's in Burlington, Vermont, where you can see the stage where the jam band Phish got its start. Just upstairs, in the same complex, is Club Metronome, where, needless to say, everyone's bouncing around the room till morning light. In addition to the great music and atmosphere, you can also play some pool, sample from the menu, and dance the night away.

Music in New Hampshire and Vermont

Over the course of the calendar year, there are all sorts of musical events taking place throughout New Hampshire and Vermont. Burlington, Vermont, for example, hosts an annual jazz festival at various locations around the city every June. The festival offers everything from blues to gospel music at a variety of venues on Lake Champlain, and many of the events are free. Another event takes place in Conway Village, New Hampshire. If you are interested in classical or chamber music, there is an extensive annual offering by both the New Hampshire and Vermont Philharmonic orchestras. The Vermont Symphony Orchestra is supported by the state and performs throughout the region. Burlington also hosts the annual Mozart Festival which runs for three weeks every summer.

The Vermont Reggae Festival in Hardwick is the largest free reggae festival in the U.S., while the offbeat and adventurous Monadnock Music festival, held in late July-early August, features weekend concerts in the Peterborough Town House and weeknight concerts in churches and meetinghouses throughout 17 different southern New Hampshire towns.

Theater in New Hampshire and Vermont

The Brattleboro-based Vermont Theatre Company presents an annual summer Shakespeare festival. Brattleboro also hosts the summertime Strolling of the Heifers parade which celebrates Vermont's unique dairy culture. In the Northeast Kingdom, the Bread and Puppet Theater holds weekly shows in Glover in a natural outdoor amphitheater.

Dorset, a rural town of charming beauty in southern Vermont, is also a great place to go see a play. The Dorset Playhouse offers good theater in both summer and winter.
