Things to do / Travel Guide
If skiing, mountain biking, and hiking aren't enough for you, there are several other outdoor adventure ideas that are popular in the region. Here's a sample of some of the other more adventurous activities that you can enjoy while visiting New Hampshire and Vermont:
Bungee Jumping Adventure in Vermont
Adventure seekers can get their adrenaline pumping in Brattleboro or Stowe, Vermont by bungee jumping! Vermont is also the home of a bungee jumping club called the Stealth Air Bungee Club, which insists that it is the only not-for-profit bungee operation in the world. The club's professionally-trained staff aims to provide access to a genuine bungee experience without having to spend a fortune.
Hot Air Ballooning Adventure in Vermont
Another great adventure idea is to enjoy Vermont from above, floating in a hot air balloon basket, during the spring and summer seasons and during parts of the fall as well. There are many air balloon packages available based out of the Post Mills Airport, near Lake Fairlee, some of which include two nights' stay at a lovely bed and breakfast establishment. Taking a hot air balloon flight makes for an unforgettable voyage over the region.
Hang Gliding Adventure in New Hampshire and Vermont
If you are so inclined, you can take flight courtesy of the Vermont Hang Gliding Association (VHGA), which regulates gliding at several places in the New Hampshire and Vermont region. Hang gliding sites include Mt. Washington and West Rutland.
If you want to take off from Mt. Washington, the highest peak in New England (at 6,288 feet), remember that it is known worldwide for its outrageous weather, so be sure to check the weather conditions before heading out to the area. While you can only glide from the mountain a few days of the year, those days can be absolutely spectacular. Gliders must be Vermont Hang Gliding Association members, and can sign up for membership on the organization's website.
Dog Sledding Adventure in New Hampshire and Vermont
“Running dogs” is getting more and more popular as people are discovering the distinctive appeal of being swiftly transported by dog sled through the crisp and beautiful snow-covered wilderness. Many dog sledding operations offer a brief lesson on sled and harness safety and team commands. In addition, patrons often have the opportunity to participate in harnessing and feeding the dogs before a ride.
All guides are experienced mushers who sled recreationally and/or semi-professionally. Rides last for 2½-3 hours and usually range from 4-12 miles, depending upon weather and surface conditions. Children age four or under must ride with an adult, parent, or guardian over the age of 16. This is not a cheap activity but it is definitely fun for the whole family. Some places you can check out if you're into dog sledding include Bethlehem, New Hampshire and Mad River Valley, Eden Mills, and Stowe in Vermont. For spectators, the New England Sled Dog Club runs races from November-March.
