Our Sports Superfan Says:
With its waterfalls, sleek architecture, and homey, midwest feel, Kauffman Stadium is one of the finest ballparks in Major League Baseball and, almost undoubtedly, the best of the stadiums built between World War II and 1993.
The home of the Kansas City Royals since it opened in 1973, holding 81 regular season games a year, Kauffman Stadium is unique in that it was a baseball-only stadium built in an era when most new parks were multi-use cookie-cutter concrete monstrosities. The stadium hosted the Major League All-Star Game in its first season, and saw the Royals' rise to prominence under star third baseman George Brett. The team made the playoffs in 1976, '77, and '78, before finally making it to the World Series in 1980. They finally won the Series in 1985, with a pair of dramatic comebacks, being down three games to one in both the American League Championship Series against Toronto and the World Series against St. Louis. Both rallies were capped off with Game 7 victories at Kauffman Stadium (then known as Royals Stadium).
