The treasures of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art will inspire you as you discover the rich collection of world class art dating from ancient times to the present day. The museum maintains over 33,500 works of art among which are collections of American, Asian and European art. In addition, the museum holds collections of European and American sculpture, photography, decorative arts and works on paper, Egyptian art, Greek and Roman art, modern and contemporary paintings and sculpture, pre-Columbian art, and the art of Africa, Oceania and the Americas. The museum also houses a major collection of English pottery and miniature paintings.
A permanent exhibit entitled The Glory of the Law: Treasures of the Early Chinese Buddhist Sculpture, is surrounded by a plethora of changing exhibits such as "Rising Dragon: Ancient Treasures from China", "Tapping Currents: Contemporary African Art and the Diaspora", and "Red! Renaissance Italian and Spanish Textiles", just to name a few.
The museum store features mummies, floral prints, stationery, ceramic tiles, pottery, and children's books and toys. The store also holds an impressive range of books for those who enjoy the literary side of art, architecture, and design.
Be sure to check out the Rozzelle Court Restaurant, set in the style of a 15th century Italian courtyard and serving artful cuisine worthy of the glorious setting. Enjoy sandwiches, salads, soups, breads, and desserts at this one of a kind eatery.
The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is located in the center of Kansas City, three blocks northeast of the Country Club Plaza. The Kansas City Max stops at 45h and Main St. about 2 blocks west of the museum.
