Come to Wilson's Creek National Battlefield to see the spot of the first major Civil War battle fought west of the Mississippi River, and the scene of the death of Nathaniel Lyon, the first Union general killed in combat.
The battle that took place here at Wilson's Creek National Battlefield involved more than 17,000 troops, over half of which were Confederate. This park is also the site of the death of Nathaniel Lyon, the first Union General to be killed in combat. In fact, very little has changed here since those days; guests can still see houses that were once used as makeshift hospitals, along with rubble from old homes and bridges from deep within the woods. Explore Bloody Hill and stop at the Visitors Center for the self-guided tour which has 8 interpretive stops at significant battle-related locations. The Wilson's Creek Civil War Museum has an outstanding collection of original Civil War artifacts too. Outdoorsy types will enjoy the 5 walking trails and a 7 mile trail system for horseback riding and hiking. History lovers can visit the Ray House, which dates back from the 1850s, and served as a temporary field hospital for Southern soldiers following the battle. While you're here, don't miss the Living History programs which depict Civil War soldier life, musket and artillery firing demonstrations, Civil War medicine, and other exciting topics.
To get to Wilson's Creek National Battlefield, take exit 70 from I-44, and continue south to U.S. Highway 60, which changes to Missouri Highway M. Make a right on Missouri Highway ZZ and then make a left on Elm Street (Farm Road 182) about 1½ miles down. You'll see the battlefield on your right hand side. A taste of combat history with the added appeal of a museum, beautiful grounds and nature trails, everyone in the family will have a great time exploring Wilson's Creek National Battlefield—have fun!
