Our History Buff Says:

See the famous Gateway to the West! The Jefferson National Expansion Arch reflects St. Louis' role in the Westward Expansion of the United States during the 19th century and is a famous symbol of the American midwest!

Besides its tribute to westward expansion, the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial honors both Thomas Jefferson's role in opening the West to the pioneers who helped shape its history, and to Dred Scott, who sued for his freedom in the Old Courthouse here. A focal point for downtown St. Louis, the Memorial is an attraction close to a number of local hotels and restaurants. The Observation area near the top of the arch is a popular stop for visitors, who can look through small windows, almost invisible from the ground, and take in views across the Mississippi, on a clear day, up to 30 miles away. Visitors can also take a ranger-led tour of the Old Courthouse and Museum of Westward Expansion, which has exhibits on the history of the St. Louis riverfront, or take a self-guided audio tour (using information available at the Old Courthouse bookstore). While you're at the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial don't miss the recently renovated Tucker Theater which shows a great documentary called "Monument to the Dream," on the Arch's construction.

To get to the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, go east on I-70 and take exit 250B (Memorial Drive). Make a left on Chestnut and then another left (after crossing the highway) on Memorial Drive. Make a right on Washington Avenue, and you're there! Bring your camera—you'll want to remember this historic moment!
