Our History Buff Says:

Visit the first permanent European colony in the Mississippi River Valley! Arkansas Post played a key role in the long struggle between France, Spain and England for dominance over the lucrative fur trade. After the Louisiana Purchase, Arkansas Post became a thriving river port and the largest city in the region and was selected as the first capital of the Arkansas Territory.

A great way to kick off your visit at Arkansas Post National Memorial is by starting at the visitor center and viewing the 23 minute film, "Arkansas Post: Echoes of the Past." While you're at the center, explore the various exhibits detailing over 300 years of human history in the Arkansas area. There are also over two miles of trails which wind through the "historic town site" along with an ancient hardwood forest—great fun for explorers of all ages! A 2.5 mile paved trail connects the town site, nature trail, and wayside exhibits. An additional unpaved trail follows the edge of the bayou along a bluff bank—a great way to take in all that Arkansas Post has to offer. There are guided tours available for groups or you can take a self-guided tour of the town site and nature trails. Military buffs will enjoy the musket and cannon demonstrations (regularly scheduled during peak seasons), and nature lovers should take advantage of the great fishing areas in the park. Guests to the site can also enjoy biking, educational programs, wildlife viewing, nature walks and much more!

Arkansas Post National Memorial is located in southeastern Arkansas. The entrance to the park is on Arkansas State Road 169, just nine miles south of Gillett and 17 miles northeast of Dumas. Take U.S. 165 to get to State Road 169. Have fun hiking, fishing, and learning at this historic site in the Mississippi River Valley!
