Views of Lake Superior and the St. Louis Bay are the backdrop of the terrain that Spirit Mountain calls home. Boasting a stunning 1,320 foot summit, its 700 foot vertical drop brings visitors closer to the Heavens and blue skies above. When you ride one of the eight chairlifts to the top, be sure to look around at the wilderness surrounding you.
Spirit Mountain is open daily from 9am to 8pm, though sometimes an hour later or earlier depending on the day, throughout their November to April season. It boasts 22 trails stemming down from its summit including six beginner trails, nine intermediate, and six advanced slopes. 175 acres of terrain, including 22km of cross-country tracks, are serviced by eight chairlifts, including 1 high speed quad. On powder days, stick to the far sides of the trails to catch some great drifts, since most people tend to stay towards the middle. Most of the intermediate and beginner runs are to be found to the right of the chalet, while the left side is where you'll find the more advanced runs, making Spirit's layout simple and easy to navigate.
The "SOBE Terrain Park" is one of the largest snowboarding terrain parks in the Midwest. It features a superpipe, waves, big air jumps, rails, and spines to keep the energy high and in the sky. There is also a beginner's park which has its own carpet lift where you can hone your skills before hitting the major features of SOBE.
Parents wishing to take advantage of the terrific children's programs offered at Spirit Mountain must reserve a spot at least 48 hours in advance. "Winter Tots" is a supervised play group for 6 months to 12 years of age, while the "Winter Kids," aged 4 to 12 can receive free lessons, a beginner ticket, and rentals. This is available only on certain days, however, so be sure to check with the resort beforehand. There are also the "Mountain Divas" which take over the slopes in a special women's clinic. Naturally, one can also get the standard learn to ski or snowboard and advanced skills lessons as well. These can be given in private or group atmospheres.
Children 6 and under ski or ride free with a paying adult, while adults (13 and up), children, and seniors over the age of 55 have their own ticket prices. Buy a "Gold" pass and ski or ride all day long, or choose the night pass which starts at 4pm and goes until closing time.
A driver's license or deposit is required for rentals of either snowboards or the high performance skis offered in the ski shop. The shop rents out standard shaped skis plus women's Dynastar specific sets which are designed exclusively for women and their unique needs in ski gear.
The Moosehead Saloon onsite is the place to be at to unwind and grab a drink or regional beer, while downtown Duluth, where Spirit Mountain is located, offers enough choices of various bar and grills, gourmet sandwich bars, brewhouses, asian, family, and intimate dining, to appease even the most discerning person in the group.
Duluth has over 4,400 rooms for lodging purposes, and includes all types of accommodations from camping to high end hotels. Request the "Spirit Ski and Stay" package rate when reserving rooms at select hotels and motels such as AmericInn, Black Bear Casino Resort, or Comfort Inn. But don't feel limited - these are just a few of the 21 places that offer the discount.
Wrap up warm, and I do mean layers here because of the winds whipping off Lake Superior, and head to Spirit Mountain. It's well worth the trip and the bulky clothing that go along with it!
