Measuring in with a 240 foot vertical drop, Mount Kato is not categorized as one of the region's larger mountains. Yet despite its small size, its picturesque river valley location makes it a great place to ski, as riders are treated to a view of the Minnesota River and the nearby town of Mankato.
Mount Kato offers the local and visiting skier a fantastic winter experience, with skiing and boarding available on all of its 55 skiable acres. There are 19 runs with the longest run checking in at 2800 feet. Every skier is sure to find their little piece of heaven on these runs which are all well-served by the mountain's 8 lifts. There is 100% snowmaking on the mountain, but it's best to hit up the trails earlier in the day to ensure the snow is still light and fluffy rather than icy.
Snowboarders will find an oasis in Mount Kato's terrain park. Filled with table tops, hips, mailbox rails, and boxes, any level of boarder can catch themselves some serious air here. Mount Kato's hours vary depending on the time of year and the holiday season, but expect night skiing season round. The regular ski hours on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday are from 9:30am to 9:00pm, while Fridays and Saturdays give you an extra hour as the slopes remain open till 10:00pm. Make sure to check out Mount Kato's great mid-week specials for fantastic discounts such as Tuesday and Thursday Night College Night Special Discounts.
For those looking for a longer-term stay on the mountain, Mount Kato offers a range of different lessons ranging from beginners' instruction to preparing aspiring racers for competition. For a more relaxed adventure, make sure to check out the three lane tubing park for a different kind of high speed snow sport thrill.
If you're looking for a bite to eat, the mountain's two-level chalet serves up bite size snacks and beverages throughout the day to keep you warm. For an evening bite out, check out Mankato, just a mile away from the mountain's base. Makato serves up a selection of baked goods at Cafés, Delis, Bistros, and Buffets with a selection sure to satisfy every appetite. If you're looking for a "bigger" break from the mountain, remember that the twin cities are just 70 minutes away, and St. Paul and Minneapolis both offer a wide selection of dining and nightlife.
There is a wide selection of lodging options on the roads heading away from the mountain, as well as in nearby Makato, where a number of familiar hotel chains have branches. Also found in Mankato are smaller B&B style lodgings for those looking to hit up the mountain. Finally, don't forget to check out the huge choice of lodgings located in the Twin Cities.
