Things to do / Travel Guide
Visit the forest with more breeding birds than any other national forest. With fresh clean lakes and a colorful cultural history, recreation opportunities are plentiful at Superior National Forest.
Located on the border of a lake of the same name, Superior National Forest contains over 445,000 acres of water, including the most used wilderness area in America, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, formed by glaciers during the late Ice Age. Besides great water sports on over 1,000
lakes and streams such as canoeing, boating and fishing, visitors can camp where early Native Americans, missionaries, loggers and explorers once traveled and enjoy hiking, biking and skiing. If nature is your thing, plants and animals are abundant at Superior National Forest and include white pines, eagles, loons, moose and even a wolf or two. The boreal forest ecological community is the largest of its kind in the lower 48 states and is dense with crisp fir, spruce, aspen, birch, and maple trees. There are also great interpretive programs and visitor center exhibits, so no matter what you decide to do, the Superior National Forest is true to its name.
Get to the Superior National Forest by traveling approximately 30 miles northeast on US Highway 61 from Two Harbors. The byway is on the left on State Highway 5. The byway starts at Silver Bay on the east side and travels west 54 miles to Aurora.
