Recognized for its quality walleye and muskie lakes as well as its fantastic snowmobile trails, the Chippewa National Forest offers over 160 miles of trail through Northern Minnesota and is home to the largest breeding population of bald eagles in the lower 48 states. The Edge of the Wilderness has more than 1,000 lakes and one large river, and offers some of Minnesota's most popular fishing, camping, trail, winter sports and resort opportunities.
The Chippewa National Forest has 23 developed campgrounds, with access to hiking and biking trails, fishing piers, scenic byways and some of the best fishing lakes in the state of Minnesota. Visitors can view spring wildflowers and go canoeing on routes, ranging from the mighty Mississippi and the unpredictable Leech Lake to the slow moving Shingobee River. Winter enthusiasts can experience excellent snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice fishing and snowmobiling opportunities among the aspen, birch, pines, balsam fir and maples which blanket the forest. With a total of 200 backcountry sites, 290 miles of hiking trails, 900 miles of river and three of the largest lakes in Minnesota, you won't find a better outdoor adventure than you'll have at the Chippewa National Forest!
The Chippewa National Forest is located in northern Minnesota, roughly between the cities of Grand Rapids and Bemidji. Highway 2 and many other roads access the forest.
