Adventure Travel on the Lakes and Trails of Minnesota
Travelers seeking an adventure experience in Minnesota need to just put their canoe into one of the thousands of lakes in the state and start paddling. Multi-day canoeing and hiking trips will get you deep into the unique wilderness of Minnesota.
Hundreds of miles of rail have been converted to bike trails throughout the region. The terrain is mostly flat.
Rock climbing is popular in Minnesota, certainly the best in the Midwestern United States. Interstate State Park is easily accessible, about 1 hour away from Minneapolis. The sea cliffs of the North Shore are probably best for a weekend or longer, with many varied climbing sites.
Skiers will find a variation of their sport – skijoring – almost unique to Minnesota. In skijoring, a dog (or a pack) pulls the cross-country skier. Ely, Minnesota is a good place to hook up with an outfitter, who will provide the dog. A bit more conventional, get a snowmobile and start driving. There are 20,000 miles of snowmobile “highways” to cover, so pick a direction and go. Be sure to get back by April, when the highway melts.

- Venture deep into the wilderness with your canoe for some excellent wildlife viewing and fishing. Outfitters run multi-day treks that include hiking and biking as well as lots of paddling. Choose between routes that end each day at an inn or lodge or camp in the wilderness.
- Trek along the 200 mile length of the Superior Hiking Trail, extending all the way north on the ridges above Lake Superior's North Shore. State parks along the trail offer camping and outfitters have put together multi-day “lodge to lodge” packages.
