Our Tourist Attractions Expert Says:

Almost everyone has heard of the Sears Tower. Chicago's, and one of the world's tallest buildings soars 110 stories high, offering spectacular views of the Windy City and even neighboring states on a clear day. While the Sears Tower is a fabulous stop with a lot to offer besides the view, it usually draws large crowds most of the day and is not recommended for claustrophobics, those with a short patience span, or limited time.

Sears Tower is a 110-story office building with its Skydeck on the 103 floor. Elevators equipped with 50-inch flat screen monitors make you feel like you're blasting off through the top of the sky-scraper and into space, complete with views of the earth as you rocket toward the Skydeck. The 70-second high-speed elevator trip will be a thrill ride for some, but a nightmare for anyone with even mild claustrophobia.

Unfortunately, you're often stuck in a very long, crowded line while waiting to get on the elevator, so by the time you make it to the top your patience could be shot. Also, keep your valuables close! Unfortunately, with so may people visiting at the same time, the Sears Tower is a prime location for people with sticky fingers.

The best time to visit is after 5 p.m. There are fewer crowds and you can get a spectacular sunset view. On a clear day, visibility extends up to 50 miles, and you can catch glimpses of four surrounding states. The day you visit may not be one of those ideal crystal-clear days that afford you breath-taking panoramic views of the Windy City, so your first visit to the Sears Tower may not be your last.

Besides the breathtaking view, you can enjoy multimedia exhibits on Chicago history while on the Skydeck. Interactive kiosks provide "virtual" tours of some of Chicago's most popular landmarks. The computer-animated tour is provided in six languages. In addition, the Skydeck's walls are covered with chronological pictures from Chicago's storied past and gives glimpses into some of the city's historic characters. There's even a great exhibit for kids. The Knee High Chicago exhibit extends all the way around the Skydeck. Cool cut-out windows put kids eye-to-eye with scenes from Chicago's most fascinating moments in history. The Skydeck also has high-tech, high-powered telescopes for a closer look at the city. There's also a row of backdrops that you can stand, kneel or poke your head through that give the illusion that you are a window-washer or construction worker balancing 1,450 feet in the air. If you forgot your camera, or if you just want a souvenir, let the Sears Tower staff take your picture. It will be ready for you in a custom folder before you leave.

Allow one hour to experience all the SkyDeck has to offer; allow more time for longer lines.

Restaurants in the Sears Tower include Augustino's Rock and Roll Deli, located on the 2nd floor restaurant level. A great Mexican restaurant called Salsario Loco is also located on the 2nd floor restaurant level. In the main lobby there is a Starbucks and a Corner Bakery and on Lower Level 1 is Venice Café, a long-standing Chicago favorite.

The easiest place to park is the Sears Tower parking garage. If you aren't driving, the Quincy Orange line stop is about two blocks from the Tower.

The Skydeck is open 365 days a year, including all holidays. It only closes for special events and when there are extremely high winds.

Visitors must arrive and purchase tickets 30 minutes prior to closing to make the day's final trip up to the Skydeck.
