Ice Age Scenic Trail runs 600 miles through the state of Wisconsin following the unique glacial formations throughout the landscape. Ultimately, 1,000 miles will be completed. The trail preserves much of the area in the northern U.S. that was once (about 15,000 years ago) situated under gigantic layers of ice. These massive ice blocks of the past have transformed over time into gently rolling pastures and famous moraines (rock debris that has fallen or been pulled from a glacier) like the ones you will see along the trail. Other features include kettles, ridges, bogs, eskers, forested hills, and lakes.
All segments of this charming trail are open for travel by foot for walking, hiking, and backpacking, and some areas are open to horses, bikes, and snowmobile use. Hunting and fishing are permitted in the proper season and with permits.
From Ice Age National Scenic Trail - Wisconsin:
A mere 15,000 years ago, two-thirds of what is today Wisconsin lay under the grip of colossal ice sheets. The climate warmed and they began to melt back. In their wake, they left an impressive glacial landscape of fascinating landforms--moraines, drumlins, kames, kettles, eskers, outwash plains, erratics, meltwater channels, potholes, driftless (unglaciated) topography, glacial lake beds and islands, and more.
