Our Beach Bum Says:

Busy all summer long with screaming kids and chatter, Chicago's North Avenue Beach attracts both families and singles to its clean, spacious, and sandy beach, where people watching is the most popular sport. If your sport of choice involves more movement, however, never fear! The Beach is well equipped with bikes and volleyball equipment (for use on the more than 50 volleyball courts!) for rent, as well as essentials like sunglasses and bottled water. Runners and cyclists should head straight to the lake shore path for a perfect trip.

Of course, if all you're looking to do is relax and take in the views, the Chicago skyline can't be beat when you're relaxing on the sand. North Avenue Street Beach also has breakwaters for fishing, and grassy strips for barbecues. The swimming's great too but note that lifeguards are only on duty here during the summer months, between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

When you feel the need to ditch the sand, why not head over to the roller-hockey rink and open-air fitness center, and pump some iron. Bathrooms are available in the big-boatlike building, where snacks are also for sale. If you're visiting in the winter, make sure to layer up because the wind off Lake Michigan will chill you to the bone. In addition to concessions, the beach house also has shops, as well as a casual restaurant on the second floor that serves up tasty burgers, salads and wings, should you want a bite. It's best to get here using public transportation or walking. If you prefer to drive, however, be sure to arrive early so you can find parking.
