Snorkeling in Chicago, Illinois, Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Lake Michigan

Things to do / Travel Guide

While Chicagoland lakes might not be the tropics, they are anything but boring when it comes to snorkeling. Summer is usually the best time to snorkel because most of the salmon, trout, and crappies are at their peak season.

Along the Chicago shoreline you can see schools of rainbow trout or smelt, but at the North Avenue Beach, take a gander at the rock bottom and sea wall. You might be able to find some coins that have drifted near shore from past ship wrecks!

Lake Geneva, just outside Kenosha, Wisconsin, is a popular choice for fishing and snorkeling because of the high population of lake trout, jumbo perch, crappie, and blue gill. There is a lot of boat traffic on Lake Geneva, and it is mandatory to register with the Water Safety Patrol. However, registration is free and good for a lifetime! Snorkel masks and fins are relatively inexpensive, and can be rented along the shores of Lake Geneva.
