Things to do / Travel Guide
There are some excellent city parks in the Chicago and southern Wisconsin region, where you and the family can run around in the midst of skyscrapers and such; this is because the big cities in the region were planned out in the late 19th century and the planners knew the importance of city outlets for recreation.
Chicago Parks
There are three major parks in Chicago, all bordering Lake Michigan:
In Grant Park, the huge park located on the eastern side of the Loop, there are many activities for kids to participate in, including tennis, softball, and boating. Betwixt and between, there is plenty of space for kids to create their own fun. They can meander among the surroundings and even chill out overlooking Lake Michigan. Close by is Millennium Park, where all are enchanted by the Bean, or Cloud Gate, and the fantastically-weird Crown Fountain.
Lincoln Park, located within the community of that name, is an amazing place for kids to run around in and blow off steam. It uses forests, lagoons, and sport facilities as part of its landscape. With over 15 baseball diamonds, six basketball courts, one zoo, and a field house, kids have plenty to do to keep them occupied.
Jackson Park was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, who also designed Central Park in New York City. It's located in Hyde Park, on the south side, and its centered around two lagoons and a harbor. Connected by Midway Plaisance Park to Washington Park, another major and large park, the two enjoy less popularity than their more northerly siblings, but are fun and safe nonetheless.
Southern Wisconsin Parks
Milwaukee has a good amount of parks and an amazing recreational area that allows kids to burn off excess energy. The Wilson Recreational Area in southern Milwaukee offers baseball, tennis, volleyball, and swimming for the sport lover in your family! Just northwest is Mitchell Park, normally known as the place the “the Domes” kids have a chance to play on the playground after partaking in a great game of baseball or a one-on-one match of tennis.
Centrally located off Lake Michigan near downtown Milwaukee is Bradford Beach, where kids can swim in Lake Michigan and rinse off the sand from the playground or the volleyball court. North near Glendale is Brown Deer Park where kids can switch from tennis, to baseball, back to volleyball, and maybe throw in some playground time!
In Madison, look no further than Lake Monona and Lake Mendota for parks and beaches. Feed the ducks, fish, go boating, or play ball, and following, chow down on some fresh-grilled sausages and hamburgers.
