Things to do / Travel Guide
The metro Chicago and southern Wisconsin region is for the most part a water region, bordering Lake Michigan on its southwestern side. Indiana Dunes State Park is located slightly east of Lake Michigan's southern tip, while Chicago, and all of so-called Chicagoland, is located around 40 miles northwest on the lake's shore. Milwaukee, Wisconsin is around 90 miles north of Chicago, also on Lake Michigan's shore north. Madison is 80 miles due west from Milwaukee. Lake Geneva and its resorts and attractions are about equidistant between Chicago and Madison, and Wisconsin Dells is around 50 miles north of Madison. The Swiss curiosity New Glarus is also in the vicinity of Madison.
The whole region is quite flat, though there is a slight elevation gain the farther west you go. The major rivers are the Chicago River, which branches out from Lake Michigan, and eventually meets up with the Mississippi; and the Milwaukee River, which starts north of the city and empties into Lake Michigan. Meanwhile, there are many lakes, large and small, in northern Illinois and Wisconsin. There are many lakes near Milwaukee, while Madison is located between two lakes: Lake Mendota and Lake Monona.
