Aloha and welcome to Old Lahaina Town! This area of Maui stands out from all the others as having its own unique attractions, specifically the Old Lahaina Luau, the Lahaina Harbor, and internationally acclaimed restaurants and galleries! The architecture of Old Lahaina Town is also unique, dating back to colonial times when whaling was the industry and recreation of the area. Each old wooden building is well preserved with a little plaque proudly displaying the year it was built. Head into some of the stores and galleries and you'll find native Hawaiian souvenirs as well as work by Salvador Dali and Picasso, lyrics by John Lennon, and movie scripts signed by Marlon Brando. After dark, this quaint little shopping area becomes a haven for nightlife, filled with music and bars that stay busy well into the night.
The Lahaina Harbor is worth a visit, especially if you're interested in signing up for any of the various tours that depart from the port. Daily ferry service is offered to the nearby islands of Molokai and Lanai, and during whale season (November-May), you may even get lucky and spot a whale or two! Sailing charters are also available and offer gorgeous views of the ocean, of Lahaina, and of surrounding islands.
Another unique attraction of Old Lahaina Town is the banyan tree which marks the center of the town. Over a hundred years old and stretching out over a hundred yards, this magnificent tree is a celebrated icon of Old Lahaina. Every Earth Day, its birthday is celebrated, and every December there's a tree lighting festival—both should not be missed!
So when you're ready for a break from the beaches, head over to Maui's Old Lahaina Town for some drinks, some history, and a lot of fun!
