The Museum opened its doors to the public in 1987. Since then, it has received local, state and national recognition for its exceptional work, and frequently serves as a resource for other educational ventures. Its offsite programs include a traveling historical photo exhibit that was displayed at the Smithsonian's Festival of American Folklife on the National Mall in Washington D.C.
