Wailuku, Hawaii
The Halekii-Pihana Heiau State Monument, on Maui, is one of the more important historical sites on the island, which serves as a reminder of Hawaii's ancient history. The Halekii-Pihana Heiau State Monument is a pair of stone-built Heiau (temples) that commemorate the birth, life, and death of Kahekili, the last ruling chief of Maui. It is believed to be the site of human sacrifices, as recently as the late 1700's by Kamehameha the Great. Besides the religious and cultural significance of the site, the views of Central Maui, Wailuku and Kahului are great. The Heiau are quite accessible less than a mile inland from the coast in Wailuku at the end of Hea Place.
