Makena Beach is a pristine, calm, and beautiful beach in South Maui, Hawaii. It consists of two main beaches, the Big Beach (Onekoa Beach) and the Little Beach (Pu'u Ola'I Beach). Both are great options for hours and hours of family fun out in the sun!
Big Beach is considered to be one of the best beaches in Maui. This mile long stretch is filled with orange and white sands alongside clear blue-green water. The cliff's in the background make for a gorgeous and dramatic contrast. Body boarding, body surfing, snorkeling, and skim boarding are all popular activities at Big Beach due to the inclined shoreline and large shore breaks – children and inexperienced swimmers should be careful when there's a large swell with powerful waves. The area is filled with shady and sunny areas, picnic tables, and has a few porta-potties. Shoes should be worn in the shady areas because the large trees overhead shed thorny bits that can cause quite painful jabs into your feet. Another tip: Pay attention to what's going on in the water below – you may get lucky and see some sea turtles!
Little Beach is the place to go if you're interested in some clothing optional beaching. If you're not uncomfortable with the nakedness around you, then Little Beach is also the place to be during sunset. Everyone jumps in the water or makes drum circles out on the sand to celebrate the setting of the sun. There are fire dancers and other entertainers abound. It's quite the experience! Swimming and body surfing are popular daytime activities at Makena's Little Beach.
So whether you choose the magnificence of the grand Big Beach or the primitiveness of the Little Beach, you'll be sure to have a fantastic time at Makena!
