Things to do / Travel Guide
Snorkeling is an excellent way to discover the magnificent beauty beneath the waters of Maui and Lanai. There are many places on each of these islands that offer snorkeling courses and that rent out snorkeling equipment.
Maui
People who wish to go snorkeling in Maui need look no further than the popular diving sites for good spots to snorkel. The western coast of Maui, where Honolua Bay, Olowalu, and Five Caves are located, is particularly recommended. Snorkeling equipment can be purchased in any of the dive shops. Under the waters around Maui, the fish are known for their tame demeanor. Snorkelers can also see white-tipped reef sharks, turtles, manta rays, and gorgeous coral reefs.
Three miles off the coast of Maui sits the islet of Molokini, a volcanic cinder cone poking out through the surface of the Pacific Ocean. Molokini is famous for crystal-clear waters filled with all sorts of tropical aquatic life, ranging from stingrays, to exotic fish, to eels, electric and otherwise. Also considered one the best places on Maui to snorkel, Molokini is also a Marine Life Conservation District Seabird Sanctuary.
Other great places for snorkeling on Maui are Kapalua Bay and the legendary Black Rock in Kaanapali, both located on the northwestern tip of the island.
Lanai
On a snorkeling trip in Lanai, you can see underwater lava formations, such as tunnels, ridges, pinnacles, caverns, and archways, which are home to a wide array of exotic Hawaiian marine creatures. For the best snorkeling on Lanai, visitors are encouraged to go to where the reef is most developed, a spot between Manele Bay and the furthermost eastern part of Hulopoe Beach.
