Things to do / Travel Guide
Maui, one of the smaller representatives of the group of islands collectively known as Hawaii, is not the only place where visitors can ski, snorkel and suntan all in one day. Visitors may be surprised to learn that there is another mountain (or should I say volcano?) on Hawaii's Big Island – Oahu. Whatever the island, there is always some snow to be found in this tropical destination.
That being said, it is very rare for snow to fall on Mount Haleakala, which means “House of the Sun” in Hawaiian. The last major snowstorm was in 2002, and it melted in 2 days! So when that snow falls, get there quick! February and March are the best times to catch this once in a lifetime experience.
Please exercise extreme caution when attempting to ski this 10,023 foot volcano, as there is a very shallow snowpack. The underlying lava rock can be uncovered at any moment, and is liable to cause major injuries if one is not prepared. This type of skiing is definitely not for the novice or intermediate! It is recommended only for professional extreme skiers, or at least for advanced riders with a guide in tow.
As far as lodging and eating goes you're in more stable territory. After all, this is Hawaii we're talking about! Cafes and a relaxed pace of life is standard here in the tropics and, for that reason alone, people sipping a Kona coffee at one of the multiple cafes is a sight all too common. There is stupendous shopping, beaches, bars, and restaurants available all over Maui. If you want to tell your friends back home about the really coolly named restaurant you dined in, try the Humuhumunkunukuapuaa Restaurant with their thatched roof and views that will stun you. Of course you may have trouble actually pronouncing it for your friends, so you might be more comfortable at the more easily remembered Cheeseburger in Paradise. Most lodging choices are located on the West or South sides of the island, which is full of hotels and resorts. You may, however, opt to give the Upcountry a try with its traditional guest lodging in bungalows.
Surf's – oops – skis up dude! Welcome to some of the most interesting skiing in the United States!
