Things to do / Travel Guide
Maui
The island of Maui is abloom throughout the year with a variety of plant and animal life. Maui's landscape is replete with desert cacti and exotic tropical rainforests as well ginger, sugar cane, bananas, pineapples, hibiscus flowers, mountain apples, bamboo, coconuts, sweet potatoes, and mulberries. As many endangered species, like the green sea turtle, seals, the parrotbill bird, hawks, and falcons, call Maui home, and visitors are requested to treat the ecosystem and the plant and animal life throughout the island with respect.
Molokai
Molokai features a variety of trees, as well as other plant and animal life. The north shore of Molokai is a veritable Hawaiian Garden of Eden overflowing with lush, tropical plants and flowers, waterfalls, tropical birds and hidden beaches. Two kinds of trees, the kiawe and ohia lehua, are predominately prevalent in, respectively, the drier and wetter areas of Molokai. Along the island's inland streams, guava plants and kukui forests can be found. Molokai is also the home of many indigenous and endangered birds, such as the pueo (Hawaiian owl), the Hawaiian coot, and the black-necked stilt. Other animals that can be viewed on Molokai are axis deer, and feral pigs and goats. Humpback and sperm whales are known to visit the waters off the Molokai coast during winter.
Lanai
Lanai is home to a wide array of plant life. For instance, kiawe trees, a thorny relation of mesquite trees, can be commonly found along the coastal areas of Lanai, in addition to a variety of pine trees, such as Norfolk pines and Cook Island pines. Animal life on the island of Lanai is also somewhat varied. In particular, birds breed with abandon thanks, in no small part, to Lanai's lack of mongoose (which are known for eating bird eggs). Some of the winged creatures that visitors can see taking to flight around the island include the pueo (Hawaiian owl), the apapane (a native honeycreeper), pheasants, francolin, partridges, quails, doves, and even turkeys! Some of the Earth-bound creatures you'll likely see on Lanai are axis deer, mouflon sheep, and the nearly-endangered green sea turtles.
