Things to do / Travel Guide
Maui
Although Maui is particularly popular with honeymooners, there are plenty of things for families on vacation to do and enjoy on the island. In addition to bamboo forests, tropical birds, volcanoes, and one spectacular beach after another, families with children can take a glass-bottom boat tour of the waters surrounding Maui. On a glass-bottom boat, your kids will be enthralled by the close up view they'll get of exotic Hawaiian fish, corals, and lava rock formations.
In the winter, families with children can go whale-watching. When it comes to actually seeing a humpback or sperm whale, your kids are sure not to be disappointed. Even when the whales are long gone, in the spring and summer months, your kids might still “see” some leviathans swimming in Maui's waters, while on a whale-watching expedition!
Cost-wise, some hotels and resorts on Maui offer discounts for families traveling with children (under 12), and the same can be said about many local restaurants on the island.
Molokai
The island of Molokai offers plenty of activities for families traveling with children. In addition to long stretches of the open Hawaiian wilderness, kids can explore the many ancient tide pools all over the island and discover new and exotic sea creatures in the waters surrounding Molokai. Molokai's gorgeous beaches are a seashell collector's paradise. The entire family can also pay a visit to a local Molokai ranch, of which there are many, and learn how to rodeo rope cattle with an instructor.
Perhaps your family would also enjoy taking a hula lesson together. At night afterwards, you could all rest your hips together while staring up at the starry skies, your view unimpeded by clouds or city lights.
On Molokai, children are treated with an extra amount of hospitality. Like many of the other Hawaiian islands, Molokai's resorts and hotels offer entertainment options especially geared towards families traveling with children. Some hotels, resorts, and restaurants offer discounts for families traveling with children (ages 12 and under).
Lanai
Although the island of Lanai is quite remote, it can be a very pleasant place to take your family on a vacation. Some popular activities on Lanai that your children are sure to enjoy are a 4X4 jeep trip out to the Garden of the Gods (which is called Keahikawelo in Hawaiian) or a visit to Shipwreck Beach (which is called Kaiolohia Bay in Hawaiian). In addition to beautiful Hawaiian beaches, the entire family can spend a day fishing in the tide pools, scouting the ocean for dolphins or humpback whales or taking a hula lesson all together. Many hotels and resorts on Lanai offer one-day classes where kids can get a lesson in lei-making from a local resident eager to share Lanai's rich traditions with visitors.
