Experience the whitewater of the Penobscot River's West Branch and shoot the 14 miles of Class III-V (Rip Gorge); III-IV (Big Eddy) rapids. These sections, Ripogenus Gorge and Big Eddy, are located in north-central Maine, east of Woodstock, 35 miles south of I-95.
Practical Info: Rafting season is open approximately from May to early October, with whitewater rafting trips ranging in length from a half day to a full day. Popular trips include the 2 mile Rip Gorge section, and the 12 mile Big Eddy section. The river is suitable for paddle rafts.
Useful Tips: Guides are optional, although permits may be required for private trips, and whitewater experience is recommended.
Expect to See: Moose, bald eagles and osprey in an environment of wilderness, and mountains.
