If you're looking for an environmentally friendly ski resort, Shawnee Peak is the place for you. Shawnee Peak has recently partnered up with the Conservation Fund in its attempt to become 100% Carbon Neutral. To offset its carbon footprint, the partnership will plant 675 trees to assist in cooling the planet and improving public spaces.
But conservationally conscious though they are, Shawnee Peak's main attraction is not planetary salvation, but skiing. With over 70 years of experience, they are very good at what they do. Combining the family feel with modern facilities, this is Maine's largest family run ski resort, and their focus remains on value and friendliness.
Shawnee Peak offers big mountain experience coupled with small mountain value and plenty of Maine hospitality. The 1300 feet of vertical drop on Shawnee Peak provides skiers and snowboarders 44 trails, 5 lifts, a half pipe, terrain park, and four gladed areas. These glades vary in difficulty, ensuring enjoyment by both intermediate and advanced skiers. The majority of the mountain is devoted to intermediate skiers and is full of varied terrain. But worry not beginners. There is an entire area dedicated solely to beginners located on the western side of the mountain, full of gentle runs for those just starting out.
Thanks to 99% snowmaking facilities, Shawnee Peak's season is longer than average. Take note that its hours vary. It opens daily between 8:30 and 9:00am. On Sundays the mountain shuts down at 4:30pm, but there is night skiing available on all other days, with complete night skiing on 19 trails. Don't show up on Christmas Day, as the mountain is shut to allow employees to spend time with their families. Make sure to take advantage of the fabulous discounts offered here, with specials such as Monday Night Madness, Sunday Afternoons, and Two-Fer Tuesdays.
Shawnee Peak is a good place to catch air. With a big freestyle terrain park and a 400 foot long half pipe, it is a great place to fly. For first timers, the Grommet Garden is a beginners' park where those just picking up the jumps can really learn the art of jib. Don't forget to check out Super Hit Sundays, every other Sunday, where skiers and boarders rate each other.
For those looking for a different kind of skiing adventure, there is plenty of cross-country skiing in the area, as well as racing adventures on the mountain. Additional adventure awaits with snowmobile touring, which is quite popular in this area of Maine. In case you're looking for a warmer pastime, the temptation of the outlet malls nearby is often too strong to resist, so come equipped with walking shoes to get you through the long shopping days.
Both of Shawnee Peak's lodges offer a full cafeteria and a variety of other dining options. Breakfast is served, as well as a choice of lunch and dinner options, and snacks in between. Also located at the lodge is a bar serving all guests until the last lift ride up. For additional dining options check out nearby Bridgton and Norway in Maine and Conway in New Hampshire.
Lodging close to Shawnee Creek can be found right at the bottom of the hill in lodge style accommodation. Best of all, the 12 room lodge is only a short walk from the lifts. A wide variety of additional lodging options are available with a 20 minute drive to North Conway in New Hampshire, or a drive to additional surrounding towns, such as Norway and Bridgton in Maine.
