Our Ski Specialist Says:

Saddleback is one of seven mountains in New England whose peak elevation is over 4000 feet. This elevation means more natural snow, as well as better conditions for snowmaking. Saddleback also has a vertical drop of over 2000 feet and, despite it not being considered a large resort, this vertical drop is a draw for snowsport lovers in its own right.

Saddleback offers a total of 60 trails and glades covering 440 acres, with a 2000 foot vertical drop. The difficulty level is evenly distributed on the mountain, and the recently renamed paths are almost all fishing themed. Unlike most mountains, there are beginner trails higher up on the mountain here, providing beginners with an opportunity to breathe in the cold air of the high mountain reaches. Not only do they get cold air, but also a glimpse of the breathtaking views that characterize Saddleback's trails. Saddleback's challenging natural terrain allows freeriders an opportunity to tear up the slopes. Those looking for a more organized air experience, however, should be sure to check out the Wheeler Slope Terrain Park.

There is a choice of off-slope fun, with an extensive network of trails on the Lower Saddleback Mountain clocking in with 40km of cross country trails. A number of organized cross country skiing tours are available, and make sure to check out the yurt lodge. Wherever there is cross country skiing one finds snowshoeing and this falls true at Saddleback where snowshoeing is available at the Trails at Orgonon or on the frozen, snow-covered lakes and ponds in the area. Finally, make sure to check out the Rangeley Lakes Region snowmobile system, considered to be the best in New England, with its 150 miles of beautifully groomed trails. An interesting, related, event is the Rangeley Snowmobile Snodeo.

The post and beam day lodge is located at 2,450 feet, with a beautiful southern view. There are a variety of dining options available, including the food court with its sandwiches, barbeque, pizza, and snacks. There is also a coffee bar with fresh pastries, ice cream, and coffee. The Swig 'N Smelt Pub is a great place to end the day with friends, providing lunch, dinner, and alcoholic beverages until 7:00pm. For additional dining options, the village of Rangeley is just seven miles away and has everything from diners to Thai food.

Lodging is available slope side, with trailside condominiums available. There are also a variety of lodges, B&Bs, and inns available in the immediate vicinity, as well as in Rangeley.

From Saddleback Ski Resort - Madison, Maine:

Saddleback remains the friendly environment people have come to love. We've always been a family oriented mountain, and the new owners promise to keep it that way. This is a place where you can go to get away from the rushed life style we've come to know, and be treated like a person instead of a number. So if you're tired of the impersonal experiences you get at other commercialized mountains, come ski Saddleback and enjoy the family atmosphere.
